Must Have Resources in Your OG Classroom

I wanted to share some of my go-to resources when I was teaching full time in an Orton-Gillingham based classroom. I taught 1st-3rd graders in the classroom; however, I have worked with Pre-K to 8th grade students- these resources are useful for all grade levels. I absolutely could not have done it without these amazing resources! I am an Associate Member of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators and hope to eventually finish the Certified Member training. 

This post is perfect for those who are just beginning to embark on receiving formal Orton-Gillingham training and will be implementing the approach into their classrooms! It is also great for those looking to expand their resource libraries or considering receiving formal Orton-Gillingham training. 

 

Brain Matters is a perfect place to start! This resource gives you a quick look at brain anatomy... the science behind this approach will certainly have your "mind blown!" By reading this book, you will feel more comfortable talking to parents about how the brain functions and stores information. 

How to Teach Spelling is a wonderful resource to help make lesson planning easier and less time consuming. We all know that there is never enough time in our day right? Need a refresher on all of those rules...this is your go to resource! Need structured word lists, phrases, and sentences....this is your go to resource too! 

The Gillingham Manual has everything OG! This was the first resource I received in my Associate Level training. It details what an Orton-Gillingham lesson looks like and how to teach each component of the lesson. Use tabs to help organize the information.

Speech to Print , Speech to Print 2nd Edition, and Unlocking Literacy are great additions to your resources library! After reading Speech to Print you will be able to understand the language essentials such as terminology and speech sound formation as manner of articulation (what is a fricative? affricate? glide? liquid?). Unlocking Literacy gives an excellent explanation on the structure of the English Language.  I especially like the nonphonetic word lists in Unlocking Literacy (I call these words RED words and used them as spelling words since the spelling must be memorized) as well as the lists for prefixes, suffixes, and roots. 

PS: Prefixes, Suffixes, Roots is perfect for your higher level students and will help make lesson planning a breeze! It's pricey but well worth the $!

Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills is jam packed with everything you need to know about multisensory teaching and structured literacy.  Online materials are also available including sample lessons and lesson plan templates. It is a little pricey, but worth it for its size and amount of information.
